If the cladding has been varnished or stained then it is poor painting practise to put normal wood paint over them, for several reasons; however people do. It can be vulnerable to chipping, even if you sand it all off, but at least sand/matt the whole surface. If it has been varnished then I would not use normal wood primer which relies on soaking into the wood, but a specialist primer like BIN 123 which tries to glue itself to the surface (used on ceramic tiles, melamine). Then paint with at least one undercoat (pref two) and one gloss or two satin finish coats. Learn to apply thin coats with a brush and 4 inch foam roller.
(never put emulsion on wood)I want to paint a full wall of pine cladding any hints on what paint is best on wood?
This depends on whethre the cladding has been varnished before and whether it is in a high traffic area or not.
I recently painted the pine cladding in our porch. It had previously just been varnished ( several times). All I did was sand it down, undercoat it and then used a Dulux tade - washable (Diamond) emulsion. You could put gloss or eggshell (satin) on it instead. If the wood has never been varnished before then you will need to prime it properly and especially the knots which will show through if not treated. I recommend Kilz to be used over the knots and then a coat of a good Primer in the color of the paint you are going to use.
Be sure to use knotting solution on the knots as they may well bleed through later. then use a wood primer, followed by u/coat and satin or gloss. With emulsion paint you only need to use the knotting first.
Primer/undercoat first and then decide on the finish. Gloss paint has the most sheen or you could use satin finish which has a slight sheen to it. Brands : I use Crown or Dulux.
